More than split tickets: 7 things you might not know the TrainSplit app can do

Most people come to TrainSplit for one reason: to see if split ticketing can save them money.

Fair enough. That’s what we’re known for anyway.

But while you’ve been busy saving money, the people who spend far too much time thinking about train journeys have been busy adding all sorts of useful stuff to the TrainSplit app.

Some of it, frankly, we’re probably not very good at telling you about.

So, let’s fix that.

1. Pick your own seat

Window or aisle? Table? Facing forwards?

Where seat selection is available, Seat Selector lets you see the available seats and pick the one you want.

You’re the one sitting in it, so you may as well get a say.

2. Know what train is turning up

If you travel by train regularly, you’ll know that what actually turns up can make quite a difference.

TrainSplit can show train allocation information, including the type and length of train where we have the information.

You can also see train illustrations, provided in partnership with Realtime Trains, giving you a better idea of what to expect at the platform.

Maybe a bit nerdy. We like it.

3. Keep an eye on your journey

You don’t need to stop using TrainSplit once you’ve bought your ticket.

There’s live running information in the app too, so you can check what’s happening with your train as you travel.

Hopefully it says “On time”.

4. Buying tickets for someone else?

If you’re the designated ticket buyer for friends or family, this one saves some faffing about.

You can share tickets so they can be added directly to someone else’s phone wallet.

Much better than sending screenshots around and hoping everyone has the right one when you reach the barriers.

Keep your Railcard handy

Got a digital Railcard? You can buy one with TrainSplit and have it ready on your phone when you travel.

One less thing to remember. Your keys are still your problem.

5. Add PlusBus

The station isn’t always where you actually need to be.

You can add PlusBus for participating destinations, giving you local bus travel alongside your train journey.

Not the most glamorous feature we’ve ever built, perhaps, but a useful one.

6. And if you’re on LNER and feeling hungry…

On supported LNER journeys, you can access at-seat catering ordering through TrainSplit.

So if you’ve just used Seat Selector to get exactly the seat you wanted, you don’t necessarily have to abandon it in search of a coffee.

See, there is some logic to all this.

7. Refunds without the runaround

You can also deal with eligible ticket refunds through the app, rather than having to go hunting around for where to do it.

Hopefully you won’t need this one very often, but it’s there when you do.

And yes, we still split tickets

Obviously.

Finding cheaper combinations of tickets is still a big part of what TrainSplit does. But there’s quite a bit more going on behind the scenes than searching for a cheaper fare.

Over the years we’ve added features because we thought they’d actually be useful when travelling by train, rather than simply giving us something else to put on an app store listing.

Clearly, we haven’t done a brilliant job of telling everyone about them.

So now you know.

And we’ve got more on the way too. But we’ll save that for another post.
