Since mid-September, LNER have offered £12 fares on two (one early morning and one late night) services a day, Monday-to-Friday between Kings Cross and Leeds. And, further improving their value, Railcard discounts stack with this offer - travel for less than £8 each way if you're a Railcard-holder!
These fares are designed to compete with the coach and will unlock a significantly faster, more comfortable journey on board an Azuma train.
What's the catch?
You'll need to be able to get to Kings Cross for 05:40am. You'll likely either live somewhere within the M25 with good early-morning transport connections, or already live (or be staying in) in Central London. Oh, and these are non-refundable Advance tickets - they're tied to specific trains. Don't sleep in and miss the morning train, or you'll need a new ticket!
If you're okay with all of that, these tickets offer excellent value.
To help with the early start, why not order a Latte, Mocha, Cappuccino or Americano to your seat using the shortcut built-in to the TrainSplit app, or by visiting the LNER Café Bar? You can order any hot drink and bakery item for a combined price of just £4.50 (prices correct at publication time).
For the return, you'll need to be happy getting back to London at 23:49 (by boarding the 21:10 from Leeds) - fine if you've got a hotel booked, or it's reasonably easy for you to get home (on a Friday evening, potentially somewhere accessible via the Night Tube).
