We know that many of our customers drive to the station in order to catch the train, so we were keen to explore what we might be able to do to improve the experience of parking at the station, making your way to the right platform and getting on-board your service before it departs. We also know that many of our customers have onward travel by car, and we wanted to make it easy for those picking up rail passengers to keep an eye on their arrival.

With the TrainSplit app and the power of Android Auto, we can now help you navigate to the station and check on the live status (including platform numbers and delays) of departing & arriving trains - all from the comfort of the driver or passenger's seat!

What is Android Auto?

Android Auto lets you connect your Android phone to your car display and access optimised versions of your apps from inside your car. It's incredibly easy to use - just plug in your phone or connect wirelessly (where available), and support in one form or another is built-in to well over 90% of new car models.

Station navigation

With your permission, we can use your GPS position and highlight all rail stations near your car. By simply scrolling through the list and selecting your target station, you'll be able to plan your route to the station*

A screenshot of the TrainSplit Android Auto interface displaying nearby train stations. On the left, a list shows station names, distances, and codes:

1. Three Bridges - 0.3 mi (TBD)
2. Crawley - 1.0 mi (CRW)
3. Ifield - 2.2 mi (IFI)
4. Gatwick Airport - 3.0 mi (GTW).

On the right, a map highlights the station locations with numbered pins. Landmarks include London Gatwick Airport at the top. At the bottom, a music player is active, playing Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight & The Pips. The interface includes standard Android Auto buttons for navigation and assistant options.

* We don't currently attempt to direct you to specific parking for each station, but in our experience it's good enough to get into the general vicinity of the station and then it's straightforward to find a nearby council or the station's "official" car park by following local signage if you do need to park, and aren't dropping someone off.

Live arrivals and departure boards

Have you ever ended up stuck in traffic and missed your train? Wouldn't it be great to be able to quickly work out your next available service on-the-go? With TrainSplit for Android Auto, you'll be able to quickly get a view of upcoming departures and arrivals in one consolidated virtual "board".

In a hurry? We'll make sure you know the most up-to-date information on platform numbers, delays and cancellations so that when you leave your car, you already know where to go and what's happening with your travel plans.

Picking someone up? You can use our Android Auto app to track their progress whilst you wait for their train to arrive.

The list includes the following details:

2. 12:10 – Cambridge: Estimated 8 minutes late, now at 12:18 from Platform 4 (train from Brighton).
3. 12:10 – Arrival from Bedford: Estimated arrival 4 minutes late, now at 12:14 at Platform 2 (train to Three Bridges).
4. 12:13 – Peterborough: Departure listed below.

At the bottom, a music player is active, playing Thomas Theme by Thomas & Friends & Mattel. The interface includes standard Android Auto buttons for navigation and assistant options.

This is just one of the ways in which we've innovated recently, to provide an even better mobile and connected experience to our customers.
